The Small but MIGHTY Seed-THE FLAX SEED And Its Health Benefits

Flax Seed Benefits…The SMALL but Mighty Seed

Flax seeds and oil are a natural way to lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides. It also will help to reduce damaged cell membranes. Nature is so simple if you take a step back and look at it. Another important fact is that Flax gives the body the ability to reduce inflammation and prevent the many degenerative diseases associated with it. I eat a lot since I have Lupus, an auto immune disease.

And for all of you Baby Boomer Ladies out there…eating them places you at a much lower risk of developing breast cancer. So, remember that women with a high intake of flax oil and flax lignans are at much lower risk of developing breast cancer.

The benefits of flax oil, lignans, and milled flax seed or flax meal in preventing and treating cancer in the gastrointestinal tract and colon, and breast cancer metastasis, are horrendous.

Flax seeds only come in two basic varieties, brown and yellow or a golden color, with most types having similar nutritional values and equal amounts of short chained omega~3 fatty acids. The exception is a type of yellow flax called Linola or solin, which has a completely different oil profile and is very low in omega~3. And is usually used for making linseed oil for paint products. So, as you see Baby Boomers, this little flax seed uses vary. The plant hemp was even used for rope, cloth and paper.

So, bottom line this little flowering plant has many uses and important benefits to our health. And I have not read any articles with Flax where I did not see the word “antioxidant.”

As always check with your Physician and make sure you are getting the right amount for your needs. As with everything, overage is just as bad an underage.

Laura Dobson, who is a Low Carb Diets Guide, over at About.com has a very informative piece about Flax Seed: The Low Carb Whole Grain. It explains the Nutrition, Health Benefits of Flax Seed. Go say hello and check out what she has to say…Tell her The Baby Boomer Queen sent you.

A good way to get your flax is Uncle Sam’s cereal. Try it mixed with yogurt… Mmm
