Baby Boomer Humor-Healthy LifestyleWhat Did The Doctor Suggested I Do When Diagnosed With Lupus When I was first diagnosed with Lupus, my doctor suggested that I get my affairs in order. She gave me 7 months to 7 years to live with Lupus, in the shape that I was in and she informed me that 7 years was pushing it in my present state. I had asked her to give it to me straight no white wash, and she did. I was in very bad shape at the time. I could not even walk to the bathroom. My blood counts were off the charts and my kidneys were giving me a fit. The amazing thing was, that my doctor had Lupus. That is why she was able to diagnose the disease quicker than all of the doctor through my life, who had mis-diagnosed me. The sad part is that she has lost her fight against Lupus. She also told me to lose weight so that it would be easier for my joints, legs, heart, kidneys and blood pressure. Now, here is where we had a parting of the ways, because she wanted to put me on steroids and other rheumatoid arthritis medicines. After researching Lupus, I knew that western medicine was not the route that I wanted to go. If you research Drug-induced lupus erythematosus, you will see that the underlying cause is many times, pharmaceuticals. At age 13, when my body really started to fall apart for the second time, I was taking 28 pharmaceutical pills a day. My mother being a nurse thought that western medicine was the only route for me. Drug-induced lupus erythematosus is similar to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction to a medication. The drug or drugs may react with cell materials, causing the body to form antibodies that attack the body’s own healthy cells. This was when they thought that I had a rare form of leukemia. They were wrong again. Several medications are known to cause drug-induced lupus. They include: Chlorpromazine Hydralazine Isoniazid Methyldopa Penicillamine Procainamide Quinidine Sulfasalazine When taking these drugs, Lupus symptoms usually occur after taking the drug/drugs for at least 3 to 6 months. Persons with drug-induced lupus erythematosus, may have symptoms that affect the joints (arthritis), heart, and lungs. Other symptoms associated with SLE, such as lupus nephritis and nervous system (neurological) disease, which is quite rare but does exist. Now some of you might have thought that I have side stepped the Q & A here, but I do want you to know why I have chosen a no-western medicine approach to my fight against Lupus. If pharmaceuticals were part of the reason why my Lupus worsened, WHY would I want to use them in my fight against Lupus? You will have to chose your own path, as I chose mine. Though, my doctor and I did not see eye to eye, she did keep me as comfortable as possible through my flare-ups with Lupus. She did tell me about Omega 3′s and that I should try to get as much as possible in me, to help with my joints and to eat a well balanced diet and to stay away from red meats (I am not a red meat eater) as red meats would inflame my arthritus. Also, no drinking or cigarettes, which I do not do. Just a clean healthy life style and to get as much rest as possible. That last one was the hardest, getting enough rest. Most of what I have done to combat the advance of lupus and my flare-ups has been self taught. Hours and hours of research and looking for other-all natural remedies and treatments. I would not suggest that you fight Lupus alone. There are good doctors out there and good rheumatologists out there. Plus, if something comes available for you, they will know it.
