Best Way to Quit Smoking Before Your Kids Pass Out

June 20, 2008

What Is The Best Way To Quit Smoking? We will get to that in a second, but let me say first that I hate smoking and here’s why. When I was a little kid and had no power to do anything about it, my parents used to cram us into the back seat of the T-Bird and the first thing they did was to fire up a couple of cigarettes.

It may not have been so bad if it was summer and the windows were down, but try breathing suffocating cigarette smoke while wrapped up in a fake fur coat and the heater on blast because it’s minus two degrees outside. It was brutal and that’s putting it mildly (okay, I’m done).

Obviously Bay Boomers, there are many, many ways that a person can seek to help them quit smoking. Some of these include counseling, support groups, hypnosis, medications, and a host of other things. Cigarette smoking is generally identified as an addiction and it is not always easy to stop although some do manage to do it “cold turkey.”

However, with a little effort and determination, it is possible to quit the habit. So, back to the question…”What Is the Best Way to Quit Smoking?”

First, you need to realize there is no universal best way to quit. What is shown to be a great way for one person might be a terrible way for the next person. Therefore, you have to do some research, and sometimes testing, and figure out which method is best for you and your personal situation.

One thing to consider when it comes to giving up cigarettes once and for all is the cost of treatment. There are some remedies that may cost less than $100 dollars and there are others that could run into the thousands. It matters a great deal as to how dependent you are on cigarettes and how badly you want to quit.

That brings us to another important point. How badly you want to quit is probably more important than the method you choose. In other words, why do “you” want to quit smoking? Do you know?

Baby Boomers, have you ever realized that people in society can have great difficulty stopping a certain behavior that they know is hurting them until their backs are against the wall, or a doctor tells them that they may die if they don’t cease? Once that happens, there is some kind of instant, decision-making mechanism that clicks in and says “okay, I’m done with that.”

Cigarettes can certainly fall into that category, along with a few other things like excessive drinking or eating. Obviously, this does not happen in 100% of the cases but it does in many.

So, are you going to wait until your back is against the wall and your health is in total danger or are you going to sit down and think about the reasons why you should quit today?

These reasons are not always based on health. That is clearly important to most people but maybe there is something stronger for you like wanting to be around for your family. It could also be something as simple as the outrageous cost for the average pack of cigarettes or maybe you are seeking a new career where cigarettes create a major conflict.

Now is the time to sit down and make a plan to finally quit smoking. Stop worrying about the best way to quit and find the best way for you. If you feel that you need outside assistance, there are many stop smoking groups both locally and nationally that can give guidance and support to help you kick the habit. Do a search via the internet for such groups and check out the links below for more information on how to quit smoking.
