It would take several pages to list Carters awards and all of the philanthropic endeavors that he did, but according to Wikipedia, his main baseball achievements are:

During a 19-year baseball career, mostly with the Montreal Expos and the New York Mets, Carter was a premier catcher in the National League, winning three Gold Glove awards and five Silver Slugger awards. He was inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 2003 as an Expo.

Born Gary Edmund Carter and nicknamed “The Kid”, and was known for his infectious grin. Which you can see on this picture of Gary from the 1986 World Series-winning season with the New York Mets.

In May of 2011, Gary Carter was initially was diagnosed with inoperable brain tumors. Then, less than thirty days ago, Carters family announced that more tumors were found on Gary Carter’s brain. The inevitable happened on February 17th, 2012. Gary lost his fight with brain cancer.
