In a 15 Car Pileup At The 2011 Las Vegas Indy 300-Crash Kills Dan Wheldon, a two time Indy 500 winner.

 

Today, the racing world was mourning English born, Dan Wheldon, age 33, who was killed Sunday. October 15th, 2011. in a multi-car crash, at the Las Vegas Indy 300.

Following Wheldon’s death, the remainder of the race was canceled. What was left of the drivers able to get back out on the track, did a five lap salute in Wheldon’s honor as “Amazing Grace” was played.

According to IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard, Dan Wheldon, died from “unsurvivable injuries.”

Other Drivers Hurt In The Race

Championship contender Will Power, Rookie of the Year candidate J.R. Hildebrand and driver Pippa Mann were rushed to area hospitals for treatments. Will Power was treated and released, Amy Konrath on Sunday, Pippa Mann and J.R.  Hildebrand were awake and alert but stayed overnight for observation. Their condition is still sketchy.
