An Iowa egg company has 380 Million Eggs Recalled for Salmonella.

The Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa, which announced an egg recall earlier in August, has added several more batches and brands to the recall Wednesday, August 18th, 2010.

In a statement from the egg company, “Wright County Egg is fully cooperating with FDA’s investigation by undertaking this voluntary recall. Our primary concern is keeping salmonella out of the food supply and away from consumers.

As a precautionary measure, Wright County Egg also has decided to divert its existing inventory of shell eggs from the recalled plants to a breaker, where they will be pasteurized to kill any salmonella bacteria present.”

According to WIKI, About 142,000 Americans are infected each year with Salmonella enteritidis from chicken eggs, and about 30 die. The shell of the egg may be contaminated by feces or environment, or its interior (yolk) may be contaminated in utero.

FDA declares Salmonella as an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis or arthritis.

The cartons have Julian dates ranging from 136 to 225 and plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946.

Dates and codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton.

The plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. The Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P-1946 223.

The FDA egg recall has hit a total of 380 million eggs. I can’t wait till they find the tired, evil hen that did this.

With the government wanting to get more control over the egg industry to try to prevent similar recalls in the future, expect more complex regulations, more complex paperwork, more complex inspections. The result will invariably be lax oversight by the government, higher prices for the eggs and no improvement in quality or recalls. History has proven this over and over again, the futility of complex oversight.
