As most of you know, sleep does play an important role in our mental and physical health. Sleeping allows your body to rest and your brain to recharge after each day. The number of hours of sleep you need depends on your age and can also vary from person to person, even within a particular age group.

How Much Sleep Do Babies Need

According to the Mayo Clinic, infants often sleep for up to 16 hours each day, preschoolers about 11 hours of sleep each night, and children under age 13, should get about 10 hours of sleep a night.

Getting enough sleep is very important for children. Why? Because lack of sleep may affect their growth rate and it can also interfere with their cognitive function, which can lead to learning disabilities.

According to the Mayo Clinic, teens about nine hours of sleep a night and sometimes even more, to maintain optimal daytime alertness. But few teens actually get that much sleep regularly, thanks to…well, being a teenager. So, much to do and so little time to do it in. There are part time jobs, homework, extracurricular activities, social demands and of course school.

In a recent study, 90 percent of teens are reported sleeping less than the recommended nine hours a night, that they need. In the same study, 10 percent of those teens reported sleeping less than six hours a night, on a regular basis.

Quality sleep is very important. In fact, it matters just as much as the amount of hours that you sleep.
