A GLASS OF WINE
They call it a “nightcap” for a reason. A glass of wine really will take the edge off. I am not a wine drinker but I do substitute it for a wine cooler or whine spritzer. University of Toronto researchers found that one alcoholic drink caused people’s blood vessels to relax and but two began to reverse the effects, so limit your intake. Remember, relaxed blood vessels means lower blood pressure, slows the heart rate and gives you a greater ability to relax over all.
1 CUP OF PLAIN YOGURT WITH 2 TABLESPOONS MIXED NUTS
Yogurt is one of the best food sources of lysine and nuts pack tons of arginine. Because both contain alertness inducing protein, you’re best off eating this combo a few hours before bed or before a big, stressful presentation at work. It’ll reduce the residual stress you feel later in the evening. No need to replay your day over and over again in your head as you try to fall asleep.
OATMEAL WITH SLICED BANANA
Is not just for breakfast any more…Sleep is encouraged with the hormone melatonin, where stress or excitement will most likely stop melatonin’s release. Bring your brain back down to earth by whipping up a bowl of oatmeal and topping it with a sliced banana, which is rich in melatonin.
Unrelated but helpful: Exercise helps you sleep better. A good workout, early in the day, will help you sleep better in the evening. This is another natural sleep aid.
A HANDFUL OF PRETZELS
Pretzels are a low calorie and are low fat source of carbohydrates, which will help make you feel sleepy. They won’t pack on the pounds or give you indigestion.
I eat honey whole wheat pretzels and pick off the salt.
A 4-OZ GLASS OF UNSWEETENED CHERRY JUICE
Cherry juice has serotonin inducing carbohydrates, which will once again, relax you. Drink the cherry juice an hour before bedtime, in case you feel a small jolt of energy from the sugar. But, don’t worry, there is not enough to keep you up all night or destabilize your blood sugar levels.
RED BELL PEPPERS
My favorite and over at the University of Alabama, researchers fed rats 200 milligrams of vitamin C twice a day and found that it nearly stopped the secretion of cortisol. That is a hormone released in your body when you’re stressed. Guess what? Calorie for calorie, red bell peppers give you more vitamin C than any other fruit or vegetable in your grocery store or market…
NONFAT POPCORN
Pop a bag half an hour before bedtime: The carbohydrates will induce your body to create serotonin, a neurochemical that makes you feel relaxed. Skipping that butter, because fat will slow the process of boosting those feel good chemicals, and, as mentioned above, will also slow digestion in general. Especially if you drink something cold with your popcorn. It will make that butter just sit in your stomach.
So, forget drinking a glass of warm milk before bed time. It might keep you up, rather than help you sleep. The protein in the milk will boost your alertness, unless it’s skim milk and the fat content will slow your digestion, making your rest more fitfully. I am not a milk drinker so I have never wanted to drink milk, at any time.
7 Foods and Drinks That Help You Sleep Better and will make you more alert and happier the next day. Remember, sleep does a body good. Eating is just one way of naturally getting a better rest.
