If they told me that the sun was shinning, I would run out side to see if it was. Who is to say that the insurance companies would not go up 4000/yr with out health care. Look at what they charge now. Look at how many people they refuse coverage for and how many important procedures they refuse every day. They are criminals and crooks and need to be in prison.

Please John...have you even looked into health care in other countries? Their moralities rates are higher then the US. Even Cuba has health care. Americans have been lead around by the nose by insurance companies for years and the government officials have lead you astray by putting their hands in the insurance companies pockets. Even Hilary Clinton is one of them. She, who fought against them years ago has joined the band wagon.
A fine kettle of fish you want to let us rot in...

This is great, the insurance industry has just made the case for a universal access public option. This can and MUST be used against them. Of course they will want to raise prices because the risk model has changed with prohibitions of cherry picking and coverage denial. A profit making concern will NEVER voluntarily eliminate profits, they have to be forced. Private insurers make plenty of money in other countries where profits on basic care are prohibited. We should have a system like in Germany. You have payroll withholding to coverage nationally mandated coverage. You national health card can be used at any hospital or any doctor you choose. The doctor is paid a salary so he has no financial incentive either way to order or not order specific treatments. His motivation is outcome. insurance coverage can offer "boutique" coverage which many of my German friends do purchase but basic coverage is like medicare for all. If you loose your job unemployment picks up the tab. Otherwise public welfare does. It's always means tested so NO ONE is EVER without coverage. The overall costs are much lower than here because the rates are based on cost, no profit for the insurance for basic care. The hospitals and other providers make profits, sure but the insurance layer is revenue neutral. Because this system also promotes wellness care the people healthier and overall per capita costs are lower.

So what this article promotes is a government run and funded healthcare. Obviously the same group that brings us a six hundred dollar hammer and bankrupts its healthcare (Medicaid/Medicare) is to be trusted over the insurance companies?

So if the US is sitting at forty on health care than perhaps the author could explain why the world comes here for treatrment. Oh that's right... because their government run/managed healthcare will not provide what they need in a timely manner.

I believe nothing that the health insurance lobby says at this juncture. What they don't tell us is that with or without a comprehensive health care plan in place the cost of insurance will increase $4,000 or more in 10 years. There has to be a public option if we are to get spiraling health care costs under control and insure good, basic health care is available. That public option should be to expand Medicare to all citizens. Insurance companies could compete to administer the program under contract the the way they do now. But that's not as lucrative is it? They wouldn't be able to go to their board meetings and boast about 35% profit margins.
