2009 Pandemic Swine Flu H1N1 UPDATE by WHO.

The worldwide figures as of October 4th, 2009, have more than 375,000 laboratory confirmed cases of the influenza swine flu or H1N1 2009 and there are over 4500 deaths reported to WHO.

The lower figures that are coming in are because some countries have stopped counting individual cases, particularly those of milder illness. The case count is significantly lower than the actually number of cases that have occurred. But, WHO is still actively monitoring the progress of the pandemic 2009 flu season.

According to WHO. in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, transmission of influenza virus and rates of influenza-like-illness (ILI) continue to increase marking an unusually early start to fall and winter influenza season in many countries.

2009 Pandemic Swine Flu H1N1 UPDATE Globally

***Through out North America, the United States reports ILI levels elevated above the seasonal baseline for the past month.
***Mexico reports a high intensity of respiratory diseases in the past three weeks. ***Canada, although the overall ILI activity remains low, focal increases have been reported in the western part of Canada.
***Europe and Central and Western Asia, show early transmission of the influenza virus continuing to increase in many countries, with more intense focal activity being reported in those not hit before.
***Scotland ILI levels remained elevated above the baseline
***Ireland, is showing a high intensity of respiratory diseases has been reported for the past two weeks, with the highest rates of ILI reported among children aged 5-14 years old.
***Ireland and Israel, show elevated levels of ILI as well.
***Belgium, the Netherlands, and Cyprus and at least 10 countries in the region are also reporting an increasing trend in respiratory diseases activity.
