UPDATE:Indonesia Earthquake Death Toll Over 700 as another strong earthquake rocked Indonesia early Thursday, October 1st. 2009.The second earthquake sent Southeast Asia even more devastated from an earlier jolt that killed more than 500 people and caused destruction and despair.

Thursday’s earthquake had a 6.8 magnitude. The earthquake hit South Sumatra at 8:52 a.m. local time (9:52 p.m. Wednesday ET). The main quake was about 89 miles (143 kilometers) from Bengkulu. The earlier earthquake on Wednesday, September 30th, 2009, was 7.6 magnitude.

At least 529 people are dead and more than 700 were injured. The worst hit was the West Sumatra capital of Padang, where 376 people had been found dead.

Little information is coming in on those who were missing and dead and officials are expecting the death count to climb into the thousands. As it is feared that thousands are still trapped by collapsed buildings and houses.

The second earthquake was on a smaller scale than the first, but it has only magnified the scope of the disaster.

Hospitals and schools have collapsed causing more deaths and confusing.

Both earthquakes have caused widespread power, phone outages, bridges downed and roads are impassable, making it difficult for authorities and aid organizations to evaluate damage and assist people with food and water and take care of the dead.

“The situation is quite devastating,” said Amelia Merrick, the operations director for World Vision Indonesia.

“Bridges have gone down, phone lines are in total disrepair; it’s difficult for us to assess the situation,” she said. The organization had said it would send assessment teams to the area Thursday morning.

Indonesians are still waiting for the after shocks to come in.
