Yale Student Killing Update-Raymond Clark III Arrested and New Haven Police Chief James Lewis has described the killing of Yale graduate student Annie Le as an instance of “workplace violence,”, even though he did not elaborate.

Thursday, September 17th, 2009, authorities arrested Raymond Clark III, 24, a Yale lab technician, in the strangulation of Annie Le. His bond has been set at $3 million.

Annie Le’s body was found in the wall of an off campus Yale research building, at 10 Amistad Street, in New Haven Connecticut.

While the motive is still unclear, authorities state that the police do not consider the killing a domestic crime. They are treating it as “workplace violence.”

Only hours after his arrest, Raymond Clark III, appeared in court, but he has not entered a plea. Ray Clark’s  court date was set  for October 6th, 2009.

Annie Le, 24, and a pharmacology graduate student, was last seen alive on September 8th, 2009. She was last seen on a surveillance video as she entered the four story, an off campus Yale research center lab at 10 Amistad Street.

Her body was found inside the basement wall of the building on Sunday, on what was to have been her wedding day. She had been strangled, the Connecticut medical examiner’s office determined.

Yale Student Killing Update-Raymond Clark III Arrested. Clark was initially taken into custody on Tuesday.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for his home and a warrant allowing them to collect a DNA sample from Clark. Even though he was later released, police have been monitoring the motel where he was staying. If he sneezed, they probably knew it.

Authorities are not releasing details as too whether the DNA results are what led the authorities to arrest Raymond Clark III, who was initially described as a “person of interest” in the Annie Le case. Ray Ckark’s arrest warrant has been sealed. No further information can be released in order to comply with the court order.”

Raymond Clark III, of Branford, Connecticut, is not a Yale student but is  a lab technician at Yale and has worked there since 2004. Clark has  lived with his girlfriend, who is also a Yale lab technician, since he graduated from high school.

Raymond Clark III had nothing in his employment history at Yale, that “gave an indication that his involvement in such a crime might be possible,” Yale President, stated in a statement issued Thursday.

Roy Clark’s job was in the Animal Resources Center and is maintaining colonies for animals used in research. The lab is located in the basement of the building where authorities found Annie Le’s body, crammed behind a wall.

Sadly, her body was found the same day that she was supposed to get married to her fiance, Jonathan Widawsky.

I am wondering since Raymond Clark was so close to his dog, was concerned with the conditions the rats were kept in, and this lab had been a target of PETA in the past, if the motive could have related to animal rights or animal cruelty. I looked up some of the studies conducted at this lab & many of them involved asphyxiation of the rats, and ironically Annie Le died of asphyxiation. If he did this, could he have snapped with anger and wanted to treat her how the rats were treated or felt he was protecting the animals? Maybe wrong, but just a thought on a potential motive.

  2. As a lifelong educator, I have noticed that kids who were mean to animals, regardless of the size of the animal, were mean to each other. Maybe the labs should take this into consideration when they are doing these kind of experiences on animals. My college roommate talked a lot about bleeding the animals in a lab she worked. It was almost like an enjoyment in that setting. I guess if you spend your time in these labs they become the world and you respond to your environment as if you are at work. Also, what do we know about cross species experimentaion? Does what happens in rats actually happen in humans? Is this a waste and a way to spend money?
