The founder of the chain of Papa John’s pizzas had to sell his Papa John’s Camaro-1971 Z28 to start this new business…PIZZA.
After years of searching for his favorite car…he has finally been brought back together with his muscle car. In the celebration of finding his beloved car, he decided to hand out free pizzas to all Camaro drivers on Wednesday on all his outlets.
The founder of the Papa John’s pizza, John Schnatter stated that “the Camaro represents the loss I made to start my new business of Papa John’s pizza.”
John Schnatter’s Dad was a bar owner and was on the edge of bankruptcy in 1983. At the time, John’s only asset was his car. To help his Dad out, he sold his 1971 Z28 Chevy Camaro. It was gold with black stripes and sold for $2,800.
John Schnatter bought some pizza equipment and started his new business of selling pizzas out of his Dad’s bar and tried to pull his Dad out from the bankruptcy.
An interesting point…John said that he would one day his pizza’s would be the best pizza out there…everyone told John that he could never do that. He would never beat Domino’s or any of the other big pizza firms. What could he do that would be the other pizzas? his reply…“Better Ingredients. Better Pizza.”
