Oleophobic…What is that, a fear of OLEO? If you are like me you are clueless. Especially not being a cell phone or iPhone person.

The term Oleophobic is defined by the dictionary means “having or relating to a lack of strong affinity for oils.”

Wikipedia describes “Oleophobic” as from the Greek (oleo) “oil”, which refers to the physical property of a molecule that is repelled from oil.

The most common lipophobic/oleophobic substance is water.

Couldn’t Apple have used a much simpler term, like “smudge resistant.”

One of the iPhone’s new feature is that the screen has a “fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating”

Oleophobic or “fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating” on screens was something that is missing in earlier iPhones.

Since the iPhone is a touch screen device and that it has no external keyboard, most of the time the screen would look smudged since users would be using their finger more frequently to access features on the device.

Add to this is the fact that when you make phone calls, your screen gets pressed to your cheeks. Hello…natural skin oils from both cheek and fingers and don’t forget makeup, can accumulate on the screen.
