Lake Tanganyika Threatened by Pollution
Lake Tanganyika Threatened by Pollution and Congo authorities are asking Russian mini subs that are exploring the deep water research into Siberia’s Lake Baikal to assist in a study of Lake Tanganyika.
Tanganyika is the world’s second deepest freshwater lake, second only to Baikal. It is also the second largest by volume. The lake is divided between the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Zambia and Burundi.
“I arrived here with the hope that experience in the studying of Lake Baikal would help us,” stated a Congo official, Sammi Kimbata. “We would like Russian Mir mini-subs involved in the search of Baikal to participate in the study of Lake Tanganyika.”
The Mir-1 and Mir-2 mini-subs, carried out 52 dives in Lake Baikal last summer in 2008. They have recently resumed the study of Lake Baikal.
Lake Tanganyika Threatened by Pollution but research from 2008 discovered evidence that most of Lake Baikal is much younger than its widely accepted age of 25 million years. What would they find in Lake Tanganyika ?
The study and preservation of Lake Tanganyika is very important for the people of Africa, because over 2,000 forms of life are threatened by pollution. The study will be unusually difficult because Lake Tanganyika encompasses across four countries.
Lake Tanganyika Threatened by Pollution and The Congo states, “We should agree how to study and save the lake. If one nation stops the pollution this must be done by the others, or it will be senseless.”
