Shooter That Killed Football Coach-Ed Thomas-Was Former Student and Player
The authorities say that the man who shot and killed Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas, was a former student and football player of Thomas’. Mark Becker, 24, has been charged with first degree murder in Coach Thomas’ death.
Coach Thomas, 58, and several student athletes, was taking part in an early morning weight lifting session at the school, when Becker entered the facility around 7:45 a.m. and shot Thomas several times with a handgun. Authorities say no one else, none of the students were threatened by Becker as he left the building. A 911 call was placed and when medical personal arrived they transferred Thomas to a Waterloo hospital. He didn’t make it, he died a short time later at the hospital.
Shooter That Killed Football Coach-Ed Thomas-Was Former Student and Player and police state that Mark Becker was taken into custody at a residence in rural Parkersburg shortly after the shooting. He was cooperative with authorities and is being held in the Butler County Jail.
The Parkersburg Police Department, Butler County Sheriff’s Office, the DCI and the Iowa State Patrol all responded to the shooting and are involved in the investigation and right now are refusing to speculate on Becker’s motive for the shooting.
A news release from the Cedar Falls Police Department shows charges are pending against Mark Becker after a June 20th, 2009, incident involving vandalism and a high speed chase. Becker was taken into custody in that case, he was then transferred to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
Cedar Falls Police planned to arrest Becker since the charges pending against Becker are for criminal mischief and eluding law enforcement officials. Both are Class D felonies, in the state of Illinois. They were waiting to arrest Becker after the hospital notified he’d been released.
It is still unclear whether Cedar Falls Police received that notification.
Ed Thomas was Aplington-Parkersburg High School’s athletic director and head football coach for many years. He also taught Social Studies. He began teaching at Aplington-Parkersburg in way back in 1975 and was well like by all of his students.
For those in the area, a vigil is being held for Coach Thomas Wednesday night, June 24th, 2009, at 7:00 at the Aplington-Parkersburg High School football stadium, the field there is named for Coach Thomas. If it is raining the vigil will be held in Aplington at the Aplington-Parkersburg Middle School.

There is far more to this story I can feel it just by looking into this boy’s eyes.
This teacher has been teaching for thirty (30) years and who knows what he was really doing with the boys maybe more boys will come forward now he is dead.
I am speaking from experience because I was being raped by a teacher my brother-in-law for nine (9) years and nobody knew about it the reason why is he told me that if I spoke about it he would kill my family starting with my mother and let me watch. Who knows if that is what happened to this boy and finally he far enough away from him and now that he is older he decided to to take care of the situation and kill him now he had the nerve to do so.
People that do those kind of things act like they are an angel from heaven taking care of people stepping up to the plate more than anyone to reflect off of what he really is up to things will start unfolding and nobody will be happy.
I am telling you I can feel in my bones!!!
I’m with you Carol. This country is obsessed with skill and talent and fails to care about who people actually ARE. We say, “oh, he was a great coach”, and seemingly that is the equivalent of saying he was a non-toxic person. Not necessarily the case. Why would a FORMER student come back and kills his ex-coach? There’s so much more to this.
