First U.S. Face Transplant Recipient-Connie Culp Unveils New Face, after a 2004 bullet ripped away Connie Culp’s nose, cheeks and upper jaw. Metal fragments had sprayed into her skull and stripped her face away, leaving nothing except for her eyes, chin and her forehead.

Culp, 46, and an Ohio mother of two children, lost the mid-section of her face after a gunshot wound in September 2004. Without a nose, she could not smell. She breathed through a tracheostomy, which is a surgical opening in her neck. Without lips, she was could barely able to speak.

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009, the first recipient of a face transplant in the United States, stepped in front of the cameras at a news conference, she was whole. Her 22 hour surgery took place in December of 2008. May 5th in a small voice, she thanked the surgeons medical staff and the deceased donor whose nose, upper lip, cheekbones, for making her complete again.

    I think that is so wonderful for her to get her life back with this wonderful surgery.

    I think that she is brave of her but it also shows how strong women are even if a man wants so badly to kill her. She is really made of some tough stuff and that is a fact.

    What makes me really ill is he only got seven (7) years for what he did to her that is just not fair because she will be suffering tor the rest of her life and that is a fact.

    MAY GOD BLESS THIS WONDERFUL LADY FOR ALL TIME AS I AM SURE HE WILL!!!
