Please Pass The Butter…Facts about Butter and Margarine

Here Are Some Interesting Facts

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.

It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.

How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings…but it is still just margarine.

DO YOU KNOW…The difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end…it’s gets very interesting…

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared margarine with 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter.

This is according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

BUTTER

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has only a few.

Those only, because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

MARGARINE

Very high in trans fatty acids.

With a triple risk of coronary heart disease .

It increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol) .

Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold..

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here’s the most disturbing fact…HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC…

This fact alone was enough to have all Baby Boomers avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or a shaded area. Within a couple of days, you will note a couple of things:

* No flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* It does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value
* Nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

  1. This is a great informative article…and one that people should seriously consider the next time at the grocery store…You are always so up to date…

  2. Carol says:

What I want to know does this apply to all margarine no matter the brand?

They never mentioned the brands because we eat BENECOL and it has made a difference in our Cholesterol for the better.

    That information still scares me.

Yuck, who wants to eat plastic! But, not to worry margarine is not plastic. “Margarine is one molecule away from plastic” actually comes from an “urban legend” that has been circulating on the Internet since 2003.

Let’s get technical for a moment. Plastic is a polymer, whose ingredients may include polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, acrylic, silicone, and urethane. Margarine is an emulsion of naturally processed vegetable oil, water, salt, vitamins, and other functional ingredients that ensure the safety and quality of the finished product. Emulsions consist of two or more ingredients that naturally do not remain blended or “in suspension”; and need added ingredients to keep them together; think of it like oil and water. Other types of emulsified foods that you may eat include deli meats and salad dressings.

Living a healthy lifestyle includes eating moderate amounts of the right foods. For example, substituting soft margarine for butter. Margarine has 3 times less saturated fat than butter, not to mention beneficial polyunsaturated fats and Vitamin E. Yes, trans fat in margarine was once an issue but margarine producers have reduced trans fat levels to a miniscule amount comparable to that found in butter. I’ve been working with the National Association of Margarine Manufacturers so I’ve learned a lot about this particular topic. In addition, heart disease runs in my family so I have a personal interest in the subject as well. Check out the links below for more information:

  4. Hello Emma,
    Welcome to BBAC.
I will not eat oleo or margarine and I use very little butter. Mostly I use olive oil and other healthier oils but I have not eaten oleo or margarine since I was a child. I have NO intention to do so now. I think I am forth the few cents extra a pound for butter.
Please, Eat all you want. Push oleo and margarine all you want.
Let the government sell you food that has been radicated
I try to eat healthy and that is not oleo or margarine, in my book.
Make a cake or cookie with margarine and then make them with butter and you tell me which one tastes better. Hands down, it will not be the cookies or cake with margarine.
Moderation is the key to healthy living.
We hope to see you soon and welcome your comments.

Does that mean that there is no low fat spread that is healthy to eat I dont want to eat butter all the time and was happy with ‘olivio’ or any other olive oil spread or maybe flora but have regular arguments with my other half who says margarine or low fat spreads are ‘plastic’ and I’m killing us with these plastic spreads ???
    who is right ??

    • You could always make your own or use cream cheese…there are lots of options…there is other opinions that margarine is good but I am not one of those believers.
