While any man can get prostate cancer, it is most common with older men, those with a family history of prostate cancer and in black men. While age, genetics and race are factors no one can change, there are some factors you can control.
The following steps are things that you can do to help lower your risk of prostate cancer, plus a few things that are still not proved, but might help some individuals. These steps may also help prevent other cancers and health conditions such as heart disease. It is a win-win situation.
According to a lead researcher, Andrew Roddam of Oxford University, “There is a need to identify risk factors for prostate cancer, especially those which can be targeted by therapy and/or lifestyle changes. Now we know this factor is associated with the disease we can start to examine how diet and lifestyle factors can affect its levels and whether changes could reduce a man’s risk.”
Nutrition: So far, research does not support definite nutritional guidelines for preventing prostate cancer. This only means that they have not done this type of research However, according to the Mayo Clinic, you can reasonably act on these suggestions:
- Do not over eat…Eat moderate-sized portions and keep your calories under control.
- Skip High Fat Foods…Prostate cancer rates vary greatly from one country to another, but, the countries with the highest amounts of prostate cancer came from countries where people tend to eat a lot of fat. A diet high in saturated fats (such as animal fats found in red meat) may pose the greatest risk.
- Make Healthy Choices…Choose whole grain foods, such as brown rice and whole wheat bread. Limit your sweets and salt.
- Drink in Moderation…Generally, this means no more than two drinks a day for men.
- Eat A Variety of Fruits and Vegetables…A diet high in fruits and vegetables has been linked to a lower risk of various kinds of cancer. Eating plenty of all kinds of vegetables, including tomatoes, may help ward off prostate cancer and other cancers.
- Eat Foods Rich In Omega 3 Fatty Acids…While a diet high in most kinds of fat is linked to a higher risk of cancer and other health problems, there is an exception. Omega 3 fatty acids, a type of fat found in cold water fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel, appear to reduce the risk of certain cancers.
Studies are still on going about which foods will help prevent prostate cancer. While the food studies are still out, eating more of these foods won’t hurt and may help prevent other cancers and other health concerns:
- Eat soy products and legumes…Soybeans and other legumes contain phytoestrogens, which are plant based chemicals that behave like the hormone estrogen in the human body. These chemicals might help to prevent prostate cancer. In fact, numbers show one possible explanation for lower rates of prostate cancer in Asian men is the fact that they eat more soy protein.
- Drink green tea…Green and Black Tea contains antioxidants such as polyphenols that may help prevent certain cancers and other health issues.
Obesity and Prostate Cancer
Researchers have not established a direct link between obesity and incidence of prostate cancer. However, obesity does affect levels of hormones related to prostate cancer risk. If you remember, at the beginning of this article we covered Nutrition and it stated: Do not over eat…Eat moderate-sized portions and keep your calories under control.
Strategies for preventing obesity include:
- Following guidelines for a healthy diet.
- Meeting with your doctor to develop a plan for physical activity or just stay active and increase the calories that you burn daily.
- Doing some form of aerobic exercise for 30 minutes or more daily. Start your day off with your exercise and you will have more energy.
Current research does not support everyday usage of any drug to prevent prostate cancer, but several medications show potential benefits. Experts are studying certain drugs that affect testosterone levels. While these medications may help prevent prostate cancer, they can also cause side effects and are not generally recommended as a daily routine usage in preventing prostate cancer.
Personally, I would not suggest anything except all natural products, as for ever action there is a reaction.
Before using any supplement, talk with your doctor. Taking vitamins, herbal medicines or nutritional supplements can pose health risks, especially if taken in large doses. This is particularly important if prescription medications or even over the counter medications.
Avoid Risky Behaviors…Risky behaviors can lead to infections that may increase your risk of cancer. Viruses transmitted sexually or by sharing contaminated needles are top of the list and ones that you can avoid.
Cancer Screening…Regular screening for prostate cancer. This should include your prostate and testes. Be aware of changes in your body, it may help you detect cancer early, increasing your chances of successful treatment. If you notice any changes, see your doctor immediately.
