It is important to protect your baby or young child from picking up the cold sore virus in the first place. If a newborn baby contracts the herpes simplex 2 virus infection, it can cause meningitis, seizures and brain damage or even death.

The name given to baby or young children that get this herpes is neonatal herpes. In most cases, it is transmitted when the baby comes into contact with the virus in the birth canal during delivery. So a pregnant mother with genital herpes is monitored very carefully during her pregnancy and labor to avoid such a transmission to her newborn baby.

Once a person becomes infected, Herpes Simplex Virus lies dormant in the body, waiting for just the right conditions to become active again. There can be many triggers which activate the virus, such as eating arginine-rich foods. Arginine-rich foods are chocolate, cola, beer, seeds and nuts.

The onset of a cold or fever; sunburn; the menstrual cycle and any physical or emotional event that introduces stress to the body. Each person’s triggers are different, but all herpes sufferers seem to have one thing in common and that is worrying about their next outbreak, which adds even more stress, which just fuel to the fire and makes it worse.
