The key to successful dieting is maintaining healthy eating habits.

In our society with fast foods and convenience food stores on every corner, it is a life long challenge and commitment, not a six month program. However, it is a challenge in which the payoffs are well worth the effort, perseverance and commitment.

7 Successful Dieting Tips:

1. Eat a good, healthy breakfast. Get up in time to do so. Do not start your day off hungry and without energy.
2. Get organized. Beat the odds and plan easy snacks ahead. When the urge hits you that you need food or a snack, there is something “good, healthy and easy” to reach for. Such as:

* Peel carrots, cut celery, green peppers or cucumbers ahead of time so they are handy.

* Place no more than 10 (50 calories) pretzels in a baggie for a snack. Take off most of the salt.

* Drink water, hot or iced green or black tea, V-8 (or make your own juice) when you feel like snacking. Mentally, tell yourself if you’re still hungry when you finish the drink that you’ll have a snack. Drink all of the water you wish.

* When the urge to snack hits you, go out and walk around the block. If that is not good for you then walk around the outside your house five times or inside 10 times. Vacuum or clean the bathrooms. You will be surprised how clean your house will get.

3. Get rid of all junk food. Have none in the house or ask a family member to hide it. Hiding it never worked for me. Give it to a food bank, they need food right now.

4. Don’t give yourself any excuses at the grocery store. “The cookies are for the kids. They’re not on a diet. I support the Girl Scouts or the band…buying cookies or chocolate bars. Remember if they end up in the house, I guarantee they will end up in your mouth.

5. If you blew it at lunch, don’t blow off the rest of the day. Start right back on your diet.

6. Try to plan your meals at least one day ahead. The more decisions you leave to the last minute, the more opportunity you have of grabbing something quick, fast and fat.

7. If you find yourself becoming very hungry in the afternoon, or in the evening, eat a bit more nutritious food at Lunch or super. Start anticipating the in-between-meal hunger and plan a nutritious snack as a reward for not binging.

Remember, take it easy on yourself. A treat here or there won’t be the end of you. Just be reasonable, healthy and don’t beat yourself up…
