Colon cleanse diets are really starting to pick up speed for 2009.

About Colon Cleanse Diets

Cleansing has been around for ages when the ancient Greeks and Egyptians believed that food waste processed through the colon could eventually build up and poison the body.  They thought that bacteria, parasites, and toxins could make their way back into the bloodstream if the colon was not cleaned properly.

The colon is actually part of the large intestines and is about five feet long.  Its primary job in the body is to store and expel digested waste, but it also works to extract last bits of water and nutrients before that happens.  Contrary to what many think, if you are eating right and your colon is healthy, you should be having 1-2 movements per day versus 1 every 1-3 days.

At one point, cleansing was very popular until some scientists began to argue that the colon was not dirty at all and that it was fully capable of cleansing itself.  However, that argument has died a slow death as millions and millions of people engage in colon cleansing to help rid their bodies of dangerous chemicals.

Most Don’t Eat Enough Fiber

The diets of most people around the world have changed dramatically and gone are the days when the majority ate fresh vegetables and fruit as a major part of their daily intake.  Today, the lack of fiber may in fact be hindering your colon from doing its job completely.

Some experts believe that environmental toxins, preservatives from food, and household chemical exposure all gather inside our internal organs, including the colon.  As a result, the body is said to protect itself from these things by storing extra fat.  They further believe that by releasing these toxins, you will also drop unwanted pounds.  Other experts claim the weight loss is anywhere from 5-15 pounds of waste build up being released from the colon.

Even though there are few documented reports on the direct impact of colon cleanse diets and weight loss, consumers continue to create a high demand for internal cleanse products.

Types of Colon Cleanses

The most popular types of cleanses are normally oral supplements that contain a variety of specialized herbs and botanicals that help the colon to release its contents more efficiently.  There is also a hydrotherapy version, made popular by people like Janet Jackson, where up to 20 gallons of warm water and other ingredients are flushed into the colon.

In addition to potential weight loss, colon cleanse diets are also thought to be beneficial for relief of headaches, increased energy, constipation and bloating, and overall well-being.

The next time you are feeling sluggish, bloated, or your skin is breaking out for some unexplained reason, it might be time to start a colon cleanse.
