Good Luck Southern Style Black Eyed Peas for New Years

Southern Black Eyed Peas Recipe For New Years. Enjoying a dish of Black Eyed Peas is a New Year’s tradition in most areas of the South. It is thought to bring luck and prosperity for the New Year. A staple in the Southern diet for over 300 years, the Black Eyed Pea have long been associated with good luck.

My Mother always put a sliver dollar in her Black Eyed Peas for prosperity. Who ever got the sliver dollar in their Black Eyed Peas, always got the best luck for the year. I can only remember getting the silver dollar once.

Greens, thought to symbolize folding money, are often eaten eaten with Black Eyed Peas on New Years Day. This is called “Hopping John or Hoppin’ John” and is usually served with rice and corn bread. I am not a big fan of greens. I usually serve spinach, which is my favorite green.

But what ever you do, don’t forget the corn bread. Southerners will look at you like you have a snake on your head, if you don’t have corn bread to go with your Black Eyed Peas. Here is Baby Boomer Queen’s very easy corn bread recipe.

  1. Black-eyed peas and sauerkraut have been a tradition in my home for New Years ever since I can remember. I used to hate them but now I prepare them semi-regularly. They’re a great source of fiber and a wonderful cleansing product for your system.

I will definitely be serving up black-eyed peas but I can’t get into the sauerkraut anymore. I’ll probably prepare some barbecue ribs.

Happy New Year Ms. Diva and thanks for some very informative blogs posts in 2008!

  2. It all sounds good to me Beverly and welcome back to BBAC.

My Mother would cook light cloud like dumplings with Pork Roast and sauerkraut. That is comfort food for me and my sister.

She could really fry up some Southern Fried Chicken, as well. She always said her secret was crisco shorting and having the grease really hot. Let me tell you, she could scorch up some chicken. No one made or makes Fried Chicken like my Mother did. I miss her…

    Southern smiles and world peace,
