Sleep Study Information-Proves that Sleeping Does A Sick Body Good

Sleep Study Information Proves that Sleeping-Does A Sick Body Good…researchers now know, that a good night’s sleep really does make you better…
Stanford University has been doing some wonderful researching with pesky little fruit flies. Fruit flies have revealed that the immune system fights invading bacteria, the hardest during night hours and fights the least, during the day hours. These research findings were presented December 21, 2008, to the American Society for Cell Biology’s annual meeting, in San Francisco, CA.
Stanford researcher Mimi Shirasu-Hiza, stated in a news release issued by the conference organizers that, “These results suggest that immunity is stronger at night, consistent with the hypothesis that circadian proteins up-regulate restorative functions such as specific immune responses during sleep, when most animals are not engaged in metabolically costly activities.”
Circadian rhythm paces the human body and it is the same for the fruit fly, running internal clock’s time for eating and rest every day. Who would have thought that the annoying fruit fly would be so helpful to humans or have systems like us?
Here is what happened. The researchers recorded that previous experiments with flies had noted that bacterial infection threw off the insects’ circadian rhythm, and not having this internal clock working properly made them highly susceptible to infection. Who would have thought…?
In this research study, the researchers infected the flies with two different bacterias, at different times of day and night. The fruit flies infected at night, had a higher rate of survival, than those infected during the day. The researchers also detected low “phagocytic” activity, or the body’s innate immune response, in fruit flies, with a corrupt circadian clock. So, even with those pesky little fruit flies, the Sleep Study Information makes it clear that proper sleep is good for your body …
I ran into this study trying to find what a night owl, like me, should do about sleeping more for my immune system. I have SLE or Lupus. I had noticed that when I am in some “down time,” I sleep a lot more then I regularly do.
Melatonin and gamma amino butyric acid, which are commonly found in “healthy people.” It helps them sleep. However, many individuals, like myself, do not produce enough of these compounds. For as long as I can remember, I have always had trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the whole night. Even at school when we were allowed “nap time,” The teacher and I would be the only ones awake and I saw her nod out a few times.
Bottom line: Sleep Study Information shows us that getting a good nights sleep and plenty of rest, can help prevent diseases, make you heart healthy and give you longevity.
Be Well,
