“Queen of The Road” by Doreen Orion-Book Review

queenoftheroadbook Queen of The Road by Doreen Orion Book Review

It isn’t often I come across a book is both funny and a page turner, as “Queen of The Road,” by Doreen Orion. It is so delightful, that BBAC has to do a Book Review and share it. I have secretly been in conflict with living on the Islands or touring the America in a bus ( I think they are studier than RV’s). So, Queen of the Road was right up my alley of research material.

So here is the scoop about “Queen of The Road…”

Doreen’s adorable husband Tim, is apparently going through some sort of mid-life crisis and decides to chuck it all, for a year on the road in a converted, designer bus. Doreen on the other hand, can’t understand why he just can’t have an affair or buy a Corvette. The whole scene does not appeal to her and she rather likes not getting out of her PJ’s for days (she works, from home).

Hence the wild toad ride begins. Not for me but for Doreen Orion, a self proclaimed NY Princes, bon~bon eating, couch potato, whose idea of the wilderness is probably looking out her bedroom window into the back yard. Or whose idea of roughing it would be a Bed and Breakfast, in New Jersey.

So the trip begins…a 200 pair shoe collection (Doreen’s), 2 cats, a 60 pound poodle, her husband, Tim, and a converted bus, with a mind of it’s own. Thank goodness…a personal driver (Tim). After all, you can’t drink a Martini, drive and have bus PHOBIA!

Doreen and Tim are both psychiatrists. Apparently Tim is the better psychiatrist, since he was able to talk Doreen into this mad capped adventured, that went across 47 states and 22,000 miles, in a 340 square foot bus, with no shoe closet.

Queen of the Road is an off beat tale about choosing the road less taken or perhaps that should read “the unconventional path.” With adventures that include an Elvis impersonator, fire, cats that hate the bus, a Nudist RV Park, people abducted by aliens, armed robbery, romance, bus phobia, martini’s (oh yeah, there are some great martini recipes in the book). Just to name a few of the mad capped fun episodes and adventures…

You know the saying, “one person’s nightmare is another person’s fantasy.” This is the case with Doreen and Tim as they drive across America, complete opposites and together finding fantastic places, humor, romance, meeting marvelous people, and encounter life changing adventures and oh yes and more fruity martini recipes, to endure and enjoy the trip of a life time.

I found it amusing that most psychiatrists are not talkers. Most sit there and shake their heads and ask, “how do you feel about that?” Well, nothing could be further from the truth about Doreen. She lets ‘er rip, page after page, after page…

I found Doreen Orion’s memoir, “Queen of The Road” a delight. A real page turner of hilarious misadventure, romance, with out roadrage. It is no wonder that “Borders” has added it to their “Featured Book Club Pick.” Or that “The New York Times” has deemed it “Required Reading.” This “Baby Boomer Queen,” rates “Queen of The Road” with the “BIG Thumbs UP Award” and is placing it in the esteemed “I Want To Read This Again Stack.” Quite a prestigious award, from BBAC.

After reading Doreen memoirs, I know that I wouldn’t be able to look in my rear view mirror and see a blue bus with a green strip and not wonder if it is “The Queen of The Road” with her tiara sightly askew, one cat in her lap, one hand grasping the safety handle, the other hand holding some sort of fruity martini concoction, wearing designer sunglasses…as Tim drives around my usually slow moving car.
