Record Breaking Hurricane Season Comes To An End
Record Breaking Hurricane Season Comes To An End

It’s November 30, 2008 And Record Breaking Hurricane Season Comes To An End. Those words might not mean a lot to many of you…but living in Florida…they are a huge sign of relief. In 2007 Florida even had a storm after Hurricane season was closed.
Today I took all of the frozen water bottles out of the freezer. And took stock of the canned goods that I have. It is time to take them to the food banks (I do not eat processed food unless I have too). Time to put those other hurricane preparedness items…in the closet.
While it was a quiet hurricane season for Central and North Florida, today actually marks the end of a record season that was one of the most active since 1944, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). There were 16 named storms this year. Eight were hurricanes, five of them major at Category 3 or higher.
Tropical Storm Fay created Florida’s biggest problem as it caused flooding across the state with a record four landfalls in August.
The Atlantic Coast area had a busy season too. It was the first Atlantic season to have a major hurricane form in five consecutative months from July to November, 2008.
For the first time ever, a Record Breaking Hurricane Season Comes To An End with six consecutive storms (Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike) hit the United States. A record three hurricanes (Gustav, Ike and Paloma) hit our neighbor, Cuba.
While I was poking around Hurricane information, I came across a FABULOUS site. Of course it belongs to NASA. Check it out Baby Boomers, it has hordes of information…Even what size raindrops each storm produced. I hope one of my favorite readers, Rhea reads this article. She loves space information. There are some great space shots of storms. It even tells you about the density of each storm. Way cool!
BUT…just when you think it is over..(another sign)…Florida Division of Emergency says, “Preparedness does not end with the hurricane season. Now is an excellent time to review, update your plans, take inventory of disaster supplies, and recycle goods and batteries.”
Oh well…back to the drawing board. I am just glad that this 2008 Record Breaking Hurricane Season Comes To An End, with out wiping me out again.
