Stevens Loses His Seat in the Senate and Senate Democrats Are Within 2 Seats of a Filibuster Edge

Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens Loses his seat in the Senate at age 85. It has ended an era that started before Alaska was a state of the US, and President Johnson was in the White House. In his service, Senator Stevens was the wielding power on some of the most influential committees in Congress.

Ted Stevens, who is a Republican Senator will lose his seat in the Senate to Democrat, Mark Begich. This movement of Democrat-Republican moves the Senate Democrats within two seats (Georgia and Minnesota are still out) of a filibuster proof 60 vote majority and gives President Elect Barack Obama a stronger hand when he assumes office on the president of the US on January 20Th of 2009.

There comes a time when the old has to make way for the new and this is the case in Alaska.

Senator Stevens, who was once named “Alaskan of the Century” and is still considered a Symbol of Alaska’s legitimacy, has landed flat on his face in Alaskan mud. After being convicted in federal court, just days before the election, for lying on Senate disclosure forms to conceal more than $250,000 in gifts and home renovations from an oil field services company. Which by the way, the Alaskan Senator states he did not notice. (((If someone added a quarter of a million to my home, I think I would notice, wouldn’t you?)))

Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens was trying to become the first convicted (((convicted being the keyword))) felon to win election to the Senate.

Senator Stevens Loses his seat in the Senate, but will still be remembered for his ability to secure billions of dollars in federal aid for transportation and military projects. The Anchorage Airport bears his name. He ended his legacy for 250,00 in house repairs, additions and jacuzzi. Or least that is the amount he got caught accepting, his last year in office.

Where was Governor Sarah Palin when all of this took place and what is her opinion? Good luck getting an answer out of her unless it is on abortion on gay marriages…Senator Stevens fall came shortly after Alaskan, Gov. Sarah Palin, emerged as a national figure on the Republican presidential ticket.

First she called for Senator Stevens to step aside…but appeared to back away from that the day after the election, when returns showed Stevens with an edge.

“The people of Alaska just spoke,” she stated. Once again she sits on the fence of indecission. I have to give her credit, where credit is due…she finally spoke a whole sentence. Even if it was blamed on the people of Alaska.
