The Duty of a Presidential White House Pets is very important. Presidents Pets let people identify with their President. Of course they benefit by having their pictures taken with animals…but it does make them a little more human, a little more like the rest of us.

So, if it is a goat, gator elephant, dog, cat, pony or even a silk worm. Americans are interested.

By the way, Barney, President Bush’s Scottish Terrier, just bit a reporter. I guess he doesn’t like reporters, like Sarah Palin.

Americans loves pets…dogs and cats ,of course being the primary pet in the US. But the word is out and the Obama children, Malia and Sasha are going to get a puppy in November, for being good on the campaign trail.

What will the First Pet be? It seems that there are allergies to dogs in the Obama Family. In the President Elect Acceptance speech he told of his daughter who has dog allergies. So, the First Pet will have to be a special breed, probably one with short hair or no hair.

There has been many Presidents with an unusual pet or exotic pets in the White House.

President Benjamin Harrison’s son Russell Harrison had a pet goat named Old Whiskers. This goat was so ornery that one day the President was forced to chase him down Pennsylvania Avenue when he decided to run away with his grandchildren.

President Adams had an alligator…

President James Buchanan’s had elephants (from the King of Siam)

John Quincy Adams had silkworms.

Most Loved White House Pet:

Fala, the most popular Presidential  White House Pet.

Most Loved White House Pet would be Fala, a Scottish Terrier, belonging to President Roosevelt.  In 1944, Fala was with the President on a sea trip to the Aleutian Islands. Rumors spread that Fala was accidentally left on one of the islands.

During the 1944 presidential campaign, the Republicans accused him of spending millions of taxpayers’ dollars in sending a destroyer back for him. The President answered the attack in his famous “Fala Speech” while talking to the Teamsters Union. Roosevelt defended his Scottie, saying, that he, Roosevelt, expected such criticism aimed at himself, and that even his family expected negative talk about themselves. However, Fala had not been the same. Since the charge was made: “His Scotch soul was furious.”

Fala was so popular that he received thousands of letters from people. He even needed to have a secretary appointed to him to answer his mail.

UPDATE: The Obamas have a great dog, an adorable Portuguese Water Dog named Bo. Here is his picture. I am sure that he is a handful. Just what the girls would adore at their age.

Personally, I think he is DO-dorable! Here is another post on BO, from BBAC.

Always a pet lover…Presidential or pound puppy…

The White House dog needs to be a schnauzer. Either a Giant or a Standard. They may look like Barney, but they’ve got LEGs.– i.e. they are not (chondrodysplastic) dwarfs; they are tall and handsome.
I have had a Giant, Schnauzer, Nannerl Mozart, and now a standard, Papageno. They are hypoallergenic, I’ll vouch for it. They have personality galore. Just what you need when times get tough. Watch out for schnauzer antics. They could steal the show just when you need it to be stolen!
Best wishes. Love your being there. Lynette

  2. AHhhhhhhhhhhhh I see you are a Terrier type person too.

I have always had Airedales, Wired Hair Fox Terriers, even a Smooth Hair Terrier and a Rat Terrier. I love Terriers, but I think ‘”Terroriers’” might be a better name for them…they are always into stuff, are hyper, stubborn and the dogs most likely to get kicked out of obedience school the first day or the first 10 minutes…LOL

Plus Black and Tans, Beagles, Border Collies and a Poodle…OH and the Pomeranian (Tatar Tot) that I have with my Wire Haired Fox Terrier (Hannah Darlin’ O’Dae) now…he’s a new addition and a recycled dog.

I would have a zoo if I could afford it…
Thanks for being an animal lover too…

Great coverage on this issue. I just finished a three part series on presidential pets. It will be interesting to see what happens in the Obama family after all the fanfare dies down about their new puppy.
