Four Tops’ Legend and Frontman Levi Stubbs Jr. Dies at Age 72

Levi Stubbs Jr. continues as Front-man for the Four Tops-Goes to Motown Heaven

4tops Four Tops Legend and Frontman Levi Stubbs Jr. Dies at Age 72

“I Can’t Help Myself,” I am going to miss Levi Stubbs Jr. He was the main singer for the Four Tops. The world has lost him, his great voice and ability to entertain the masses like myself who enjoyed him for half of a century.

Stubbs was someone we all grew up with and wished we could sing even half as good. He had been away from the group since 2000 due to a stroke. Below is my memorial for him of his final appearance.

Levi was 72 and had been battling with cancer and a recent stroke. Friday, he passed away peacefully in his sleep, at his home in Detroit, with his family.

Levi and the Four Tops helped define the Motown sound with songs such as “Reach Out, I’ll Be There” and “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch).” The Four Tops were a huge success for Motown and for many years held the record as the longest running act in rock history. The Four Tops were definitely 60′s Motown genre.

Tributes are already pouring in:

  • Smokey Robinson called Levi “one of the great voices of all times. He was very near and dear to my heart.”
  • Robin Terry, chairman of Detroits’ Motown Historical Museum, said in a statement, “This is a profound loss for the legacy of Motown.”

Levi is survived by his wife of 48 years, Cliniece, and five children.

My sincerest condolences go to them during this time of loss.
