October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month-BE AWARE
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month…BE AWARE

As Baby Boomers, the risk of breast cancer rises. Just because we are more mature, does not take away the determination to avoid or beat breast cancer. More then ever, researchers know more about how to lower your odds of getting breast cancer or getting it again.
Here are some ways for you to beat the odds and keep smiling…
- Lose 20 pounds. Especially, if you have reached menopause and keep it off. You will reduce breast cancer risk by 57 percent.
- Exercise also reduces your risk…two and a half hours of moderate exercise weekly (walking, swimming, dancing) lowers risk by 20 percent.
- Eat at least five (5) servings of fruits and vegetables per day and you will be less likely to have a recurrence of breast cancer, than those who do not.
- Women who live in cities that are brightly lit at night, are 73 percent more likely to get breast cancer than those in darkest areas. So, keeping your bedroom dark might protect your health, it can’t hurt and it will certainly lower your electric bill. Lower your wattage around the house and keep a good reading lamp.

- Regular mammograms mean a greater chance of survival if you’re diagnosed. Don’t let anyone convince you that they or you are too old. Women in their 80’s are being saved with early detection with mammograms. Since men can also get breast cancer, we should report any new lumps to our doctors As Soon As Possible (ASAP).
- Always ask about all your options if diagnosed and seek a second opinion, especially if you feel uncomfortable.
Good luck and Good Health, Baby Boomers…
