The International Union for the Conservation of Nature in Gland, Switzerland, has a pretty sad picture for us, globally. They are deeply concerned for the Hippopotamus, Polar Bears and the Gray Wolf.

In their continuing research for endangered and near extinction species, they have stated that, “Within our lifetime, hundreds of species could be lost as a result of our own actions, a frightening sign of what is happening to the ecosystems where they live, we must now set clear targets for the future to reverse this trend to ensure that our enduring legacy is not to wipe out many of our closest relatives.”

The actual numbers listed of near extinct animals are 1,141 out of 5,487 species. That comes out to 20.8 percent, closer to one in five. However, there were several hundred species about which they don’t have enough data to classify. Which will make up the total 25% extinct ratios.

Since 1500AD, 76 mammal species have gone extinct. Explain that to your children and your grand children.

I wonder if you are allowed to shoot those endangered species, from planes in Alaska? Well, I know the Hippos are safe in Alaska and Governor Sarah Palin…does the woman even have a dog???

In addition to raising concern about mammals, new additions to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List include:

  • Indian tarantulas
  • The Rameshwaram parachute spider
  • The squaretail coral grouper
  • Holdridge’s toad
  • La Palma giant lizard

Do not forget to support your Zoos, Baby Boomers. They are the genetic pools and banks for animals and other creatures, big and small, that roam the earth…
