In a wood area, at the base of a lonely mountain side, Steve Fossetts’ borrowed Citabria Super Decathlon has been found where it slammed in to the side of a rocky ridge line. The Plane has been identified by it’s registration.

Over a year ago, 13 months, on Labor day, Steve took off for parts unknown or at least he did not record his flight plan. He has been found 60 miles due north of Nevada, where his flight originated.

Officials believe that the ridge line was covered by cloud lines that day. By the looks of the crash site, the plane went head long into the the rocks, then finally crashing below into hundreds of pieces. The wreckage showed that it was a direct and hard hit and death would have been instant and inevitable.

Parts of the plane where 300 feet from each other showing an impact, that no one would have been able to survive.

Parts of human remains were found and have been taken for DNA identification. A Federal Investigation of course will follow to determine the cause of the crash or accident.

Steves’ weathered IDs and some hundred dollar bills were found Monday, by Preston Morrow, a local hiker. He was hiking some off marked trails, taking a short cut to a mine, when he saw something sticking out of some pine needles. There were three weathered ID cards and a handful of hundred dollar bills.

The plane wreckage and body remains were found about a quarter of a mile from where the IDs and cash were found.

The discovery was near Minaret Lake (between the town of Mammoth Lakes and the eastern boundary of Yosemite National Park) in California, which was within the 20,000 square mile area that air crafts scanned during their search in September 2007. However, the wreckage was well south of the area that was searched more thoroughly.

Steve Fossetts’ widow issued a statement thanking Morrow and the thousands who participated in the search effort. She hopes to now to be able to bring to closure a very painful chapter in her life. She stated, “I prefer to think about Steve’s life rather than his death and celebrate his many extraordinary accomplishments.”

When I think of an adventurer, like Steve Fossett, I don’t think of them passing while watching the news on TV or dying in a hospital bed…I think of them as making the news. This is how Steve Fossett lived and how he died. He will be missed and hopefully there is someone out there to take his place, breaking new records and reach for the unknown as Steve Fossett did.
