The Empowering Exercise Belly Dancing for Women Baby Boomers

Belly Dance for Boomers

In the 5th decade of my life, I finally harnessed my feminine energy. I feel like a woman. I own and can wield this power. Ironically, this is happening just as my skin is wrinkling, hair is turning gray, collagen is disappearing, and body parts are sagging. It may even be that I’m gaining my feminine powers in direct relationship to the loss of external appearance.

Is this a cruel cosmic joke? Or nature’s way of leveling the playing field?

I credit belly dancing with this new sense of self I’ve developed. I started dancing about five years ago, because I loved the costumes. Who wouldn’t want an excuse to wear this?

Like most other woman in class, I started clumsily. I felt like a marionette with a spastic operator. I spent most of the time wanting to cover my belly and shrink into myself, but over time I learned to move my arms gracefully and expand my few talents. Every woman has talents and learning to focus on and enhance them is the first step to regaining feminine power.

Most people think it’s easy for me to belly dance, because I am thin, but that is wrong.

Let me clear up several belly dance myths right here.

  • All women (except for one, her name is Anamaria) are self conscious about their bodies. We all think there is something wrong with us, no matter what.
  • Having a belly, being voluptuous, actually gives a dancer more to work with. Skinny figures are at a disadvantage, really.
  • Belly dancing is not about seducing men. Belly dance is an art form of women, by women, for women. Of course, men are enthralled by it, but some days a good dinner is a more effective come on.
  • The dance of the seven veils is not about being naked underneath. It is about unveiling a glorious costume, one that your friends and sisters will “ooh” and “ahh” over.
  • You don’t have to be a “dancer” to dance. This folk art is meant for everyone to stay healthy.
  • Dancing is for women of all ages. Here is a photo of my dance class at last year’s Mediterranean Fantasy Festival. We are all ages, sizes, and shapes.

Young women are beautiful. They have perkiness, lift, and collagen. But we more mature women have life experiences that have softened our edges and made us desirable, captivating, alluring.

I look to my belly dance teacher, Aleili, who is older than me and the most sensuous woman I know. While we all mourn the loss of our youthful appearance, we can rejoice in the deep beauty that comes with age.

Thank you so much, Anita, for that inspirational way to exercise, get more flexible, relieve stiffness, feel young again, and show us how to become and use the inner beauty that all women have.

I vote for Belly Dances, Belly Dancing Exercise, and I love what Belly Dancers wear.

So go out, learn Belly Dancing, or buy some Belly Dancing wear, get some Belly Dancing DVDs… practice at home and dance for that significant other. Loosen up and lose weight and inches too.
