Oldest Zoo Gorilla Jenny, Euthanized At Dallas Zoo, Age 55

Jenny Dies at age 55 in her Dallas Habitat

Dallas Zoo and the World, has lost it’s oldest gorilla in captivity. Jenny, a female Western Lowland Gorilla, was born in the wild and was acquired by the zoo in 1957. She was 55 years old. I claim her as a Honorary Baby Boomer.

Her home was the Dallas Zoo for more than half a century, where she turned 55 in May. The Zoo gave her a GALA birthday party with a yummy cake made of a frozen fruit treats for the guest of honor and a good time was had by all…

Most gorillas in the wild live to be 30~35 years old, but with the veterinary care and no predators they live longer, as with Jenny. There are around 360 captive gorillas in the U.S. Zoos alone. Only four that are older than 50.

Jenny had stopped eating and drinking recently, and tests showed that she was unlikely to recover. Zoo officials decided to euthanize Jenny on Thursday night because of an inoperable tumor in her stomach.

She leaves behind one daughter named Vicki, that was born in 1965. Vicki was sent to a Canadian Zoo at the age of 5. Jenny didn’t conceive again.

This Baby Boomer is a primate donor and I hope you support your local Zoo as well.

The Dallas Morning News has a video of Jenny’s 55year old Birthday Party.
