Michael Phelps Endorses Kellogg and Loses Respect of Nutritional Community
“Super Hero” becomes “Super Sell Out”

Super Olympian and Gold Medalist, Michael Phelps, who blatantly boasts that he follows a horrendous junk food diet, has now signed a very lucrative deal with Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes. He is using his celebrity status to push sugary, processed foods onto a generation of children who already suffer from unprecedented rates of obesity, tooth decay and diabetes. Processed sugar promotes diseases and causes nutritional deficiencies at the same time. Way to go Phelps!
I do not consider Kellogg’s the breakfast of champions. Why didn’t he choose Kellogg’s “Special K.” I could have lived with that. He has the world at his feet and has chosen the wrong path for fans and more importantly, American children.
It might be one sweet deal for Michael Phelps, but not for children who need a role model to lead them from becoming the worse generation of obese, diabetic and ADHD children. Roll model and “sell out” are two different categories in my book. Micheal Phelps has become a sell out and has traded his fame to profiteers and promoters for unethical profits and harmful habits.
Being 23 and not a rocket scientist, is not an excuse for selling out. In my eyes and many of those in the nutitional world, he was a “Super Hero”, but is now a “Super Sell Out”
Michael Phelps has turned his Gold Metals into Fool’s Gold Metals. And his “Breakfast of Champions,” has become the “Breakfast of Fools.” His will become rich at the expense of millions fans and children. He will not be able to buy back this Baby Boomers respect or buy back the opportunity to be a positive influence on children, nation wide.
The next generation of children will be cavity prone, overfed, under nourished and a sugared up generation of over weight children who are being put on dangerous medications from the unconscionable pharmaceutical companies, to treat diseases that were caused by poor nutritional habits.

A true champion would have promoted healthful foods, green products and socially responsible organizations. I point this out as I look at Olympic swimmer Dana Torres, who is powered by super foods, Living Fuel and heart healthy habits. She’s an astonishing 41 year old, Baby Boomer and earned two silver medals. Dana is not a sell out and is the far greater champion, in my humble opinion. Kudos Dana Torres, you are my hero.

The human body is a very sophisticated machine and you have to feed it the right things for it to run smoothly. The majority of the Cereal Industry doesn’t care about your health. We should all know that by now. Eat smarter-lose more weight.

This is stupid. Who cares what Phelps does. He is just making money. More power to him.
Also, my children understand how marketing and sponsorship works. They’re not going to automatically think something is healthy just because Phelps is on the box.
The article title is misleading. This is just a single author’s rant.
Hello Chad,
Thank you for visiting BBAC and leaving your comment.
It is easy to tell that you have raised your children to know the pit falls of America Marketing…but is every child so lucky?
We are in an economic era where both parents need to work and a lot of children today are sitting in front of the TV and computer…Looking for heroes and guidance? Not all children are as fortunate as yours.
I know, I was impressed with Michael Phelps achievements and I see him a top athlete. However…
Most children don’t think about healthy when they pick out their cereal. When I was a child…(back when dinosaurs roamed the earth…) most looked for the prize. Granted, todays’ children are more savy when it come to better nutrition but don’t think for a New York second, that all children are that way.
My main point is…that children today are facing an epidemic of over weight and obesity. Michael Phelps had the power to do something really positive for those children. He has the ability to pick and chose…he is the super athlete of the world right now. He could have been the role model of the century. The world is at his feet…
I say he chose the wrong path, the easy path, the path paved with gold. You’re a good Father, so tell me, Chad, which path would or have you have taught your children to go down?
Your comments are always welcome and I hope to see and hear from you soon on BBAC
