Drug Companies Are Quietly Scheming to Take Over the Billion Dollar Hoodia Market
South African Hoodia Race Is Just Starting
Pharmaceutical companies are quietly working behind the scenes to try and take over the multi-billion dollar South African Hoodia weight loss market.
In the small chance that you’ve never heard of Hoodia in the past, the product gained massive exposure a few years ago after it was revealed that the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert region in South Africa had been regularly using the plant during long hunting trips across the desert and that it helped to curb their appetites.
Hoodia Gordonii Is Often Thought to Be a Cactus
Hoodia plants are often thought to be some form of cactus because they look very similar to common desert cacti but they aren’t. One particular species of Hoodia called Hoodia Gordonii has generated tremendous global attention due to its amazing effectiveness as an appetite suppressant.
Hoodia became extremely popular after its relatively unknown secret was shared on the 60 Minutes television show. Leslie Stahl, a long time 60 Minutes anchor went to South Africa and basically told the world that the plant actually worked. Needless to say, that media exposure helped to start the frenzy to get Hoodia to market.
Phytopharm and Unilever Scheming to Take Over Hoodia Market
Although there are many companies that currently promote Hoodia type products, there is one pharmaceutical development company that is hoping to eventually dominate the globe. Phytopharm, based in the United Kingdom, has obtained the rights to manufacture and globally distribute Hoodia products. They have since gone on to partner with Unilever on a 5 stage plan to roll out new Hoodia products.
The two companies appear to currently be in stage 3 which involves supply chain expansion and clinical safety studies. With nearly 66% of United States citizens overweight, and often close to 50% in many other nations, this is a huge potential market. Phytopharm and Unilever are clearly positioning themselves to capitalize on the ever-growing obesity problem, but it remains to be seen as to what kinds of products they will release and whether or not they will be as safe as natural hoodia.
How Much Will the San Bushmen Profit?
The real question is…how long will it take these drugs companies to artificially produce another miraculous natural product so that they can make billions? Once the demand out paces the natural supply, it’s probably just a matter of time. The San Bushmen have been using natural Hoodia for centuries with little to no known side effects. There are virtually no drug companies that can make the same claim.
Speaking of the San Bushmen, do you think they will profit equally from the discovery they made years ago?
