Salmonella Tomato Alert-FDA to Identify TOMATOES

Is FDA close to a press release…???

Federal health officials hope to announce soon the source of a salmonella outbreak associated with raw tomatoes that has sickened at least 167 people in 17 states and led restaurants and grocery stores to remove some types of raw tomatoes from their menus and shelves.

“We are getting closer to identifying the source or sources,” Julie Zawisza, a spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration.

The agency warned consumers over the weekend to avoid certain raw red plum, red Roma and red round tomatoes and products containing them. And gave the OK for cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes and those sold with the vine still attached are not associated with the outbreak.

There have been many food recalls in recent years, including those that involved peanut butter, cantaloupe and spinach, and those are likely to worsen. There are many causes and effects for the salmonella outbreaks. Not just one reason but many factors, rule in.

Here are some Stats:

As far as Tomatoes are concerned, there have been 13 multi state outbreaks of salmonella poisoning related to tomatoes, which are particularly susceptible to contamination, since 1990.

Researchers think that food has gotten more dangerous and that the growing number of outbreaks are simply from better surveillance. But that all sounds pretty iffy to me! Others think that it is the transportation from other countries and states that creates the problem…now that is something that I can get my teeth into!

Tomatoes grown in the following states, territories and countries have not been associated with the current outbreak: Arkansas, California, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Belgium, Canada, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel, the Netherlands and Puerto Rico.
I thought you might want to know that.

Remember what ever produce or vegetable you eat…WASH IT…look for wear and tear.

I would not be surprised if the FDA and CDC have some reports for us Wednesday or Thursday~

Is the TOMATO getting a bad rap? Should the government be forcing more control on food and drug??? I bet you know the answer to that question, Baby Boomers!
