Salmonella Tomato Alert and SYMPTOMS
Salmonella food poisoning, first linked to uncooked tomatoes has now been reported in nine states, per the U.S. health officials.
Those states are:
- Arizona
- Colorado
- Kansas
- Idaho
- Illinois
- Indiana
- New Mexico
- Texas
- Utah
In Texas and New Mexico, raw large tomatoes, including Roma and red round tomatoes, were found to be a common factor in the 40 illnesses, where 17 infected people contaminated with animal or human feces.
~~~~WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS ~~~~
Most infected people suffer fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps starting 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness tends to last four to seven days.
Many people recover without treatment. However, severe infection and even death is possible. Infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems like Lupus, are at greatest risk for severe infections.
~~~~How do you avoid Salmonella?~~~
One does not have to be a rocket scientist, have a PHD in Physics or be a genius to figure out how to avoid Salmonella…Here it comes…WASH ALL OF YOUR FRUIT and VEGETABLES, keep your work space clean, Do not cross infect your foods, keep your food at the right COLD and HOT temperatures.
I wash mine when I bring them in from the store, before they go in the refrigerator AND again before I use, cook or eat them. But after having and being in the restaurant business for many years, it is just habit for me. You should make it yours.
